FREE Halloween Printables- candy apple, candy corn, silly monster tags

Free Printables for Halloween!

Wow, feeling creative and generous today. I created these for my wonderful sister Rachel over at Kouklamou Designs to use at her church so I thought I would offer them to you too. Candy Corn, Candy Apple, Chocolate Apple and Monster Tags (12 to a page).

I included jpgs and also pdfs that are all editable in Illustrator for the more experienced amongst us! Please share, but please do not copyright or resell. If you do use them, I would love for you to share with us what you created!!!

Japanese Inspired Birthday Party


Anime and Manga, Sushi and Chopsticks...
my little girl just turned six!

I recently threw a Japanese Inspired Birthday Party for my 6 year old who loves everything Japanese.

She micromanaged the invite I designed. We made it to look like a Japanese anime comic book.
We made the hair color and style like hers, she wanted a tiny six in Japanese on the fan, so of course we made that happen too! We bought the photo of the little Japanese girl in her kimono from istock.com.



Here are some of the details

We had a great time making the candy sushi the night before!









Sushi China and Chopsticks were a big hit with the girls. They loved trying to eat the candy sushi with the chopsticks, all of them asked for forks after a few minutes.



We also had veggie sticks and other treats in a sushi steamer.

Each girl made a fan and parasol.


Origami Cranes hung above the table!


The favors were a big hit. Take apart erasers and school supplies each box personalized with the guests' name makes every girl feel special!

Boston Celtics Sugar Cookie Favors

The favorite of all of the New England Sports teams in my house is the Boston Celtics! These cookies were made a few years ago for my friends' son's Celtics birthday party! They were loved by all! I love the Martha Stewart Sugar Cookie and Royal Icing Recipe.

SUGAR COOKIE RECIPE
Quantity: 2 Dozen
Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons brandy, or milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1.Whisk together flour, salt, and baking powder in a medium bowl; set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream butter and sugar; mix until light and fluffy. With mixer running, add egg, brandy, and vanilla; mix until well combined. With the mixer on low, slowly add reserved flour mixture. Mix until just combined.

2.Transfer dough to a work surface. Shape into 2 discs, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

3.Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line baking sheets with nonstick baking mats or parchment paper; set aside.

4.On a lightly floured work surface, roll out dough to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut into desired shapes, and transfer to prepared baking sheets, leaving an inch in between. Leftover dough can be rolled and cut once more. Bake until lightly golden, about 10 minutes; do not allow to brown. Transfer to wire racks to cool.
5.Decorate with Royal Icing, optional.
sjk Studio tip: For thick sugar cookies that are going to be packaged, this makes about 12-15 cookies. Cookies should be 1/4" thick.

ROYAL ICING

Makes 2 1/3 cups 
Ingredients
  • 1 box confectioners' sugar (1 pound)
  • 5 tablespoons meringue powder, or 2 large egg whites

sjk Studio tip: Use vanilla, almond extract or milk for thinning out icing

Directions
1.In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine sugar and meringue powder. Mixing on low speed, add a scant 1/2 cup water. For a thinner consistency, usually used for flooding, add more water. A thicker consistency is generally used for outlining and adding details. Mix until icing holds a ribbonlike trail on the surface of the mixture for 5 seconds when you raise the paddle.

2. Add liquid (see above) to thin out.

Other SJK Studio Tips
  • This is the best icing coloring to use from Wilton.
  • I usually pipe around the outline first and then fill in with a thinner version of the icing.
  • Check out the Wilton color chart if you want to mix colors.
  • To color the icing, the best coloring I have found is Wilton Icing Color. Wilton has a great video tutorial on how to color your icing.

Daisy Cookie and Headband Favors


I made these favors for my daughter's 7th birthday party that she had at Claytime in Shrewsbury, MA. Even though each girl made a ceramic figure that they could bring home, I wanted to give them favors as well.


Each favor bag had a lip gloss, homemade daisy headband and a homemade daisy cookie. They were placed in clear cellophane bags with purple dots and tied with yellow toulle. They looked beautiful all together in a white wicker basket with a green gingham liner.


I made a special headband for the birthday girl with a butterfly on it. All of the girls wore the headbands during the party and looked adorable.




I have tried a lot of sugar cookie recipes, but my favorite recipe for sugar cookies is from Martha Stewart. The recipe made about 15 cookies, although it says 2 dozen, I make them extra thick so they don't break.
All of the supplies were purchased from my local dollar store, but you can always get them from Michaels or AC Moore. The cellophane bags were purchased from the Charlton Box Factory Outlet and Craft Emporium in Charlton, MA.

This was a invitation, reception card, direction card and thank you card that I made a few years ago for my son's baptism


Greek Orthodox Baptism - Purple & Green Part I

We recently baptized our 4th child. We had a lobster bake at the house. Thankfully we had a huge 20x40' tent because it was pouring rain the entire day. We still had a blast. The colors were my favorite: purple and green. Here are some of what I did.

Green and Purple Poms hung from the tent over all of the tables.
We kept the tables clear for all of the lobster! Check out the pom tutorial.

The centerpieces were glass vases of all shapes and sizes filled with the favors made by her godmother.



The favors were traditional Greek Koufeta (5 white sugar coated almonds)
They were made with floral mesh and raffia purchased from papermart.com.
The labels were from a template I designed but she edited. These favors were a surprise to me! Her godmother made up the design all on her own. They look like beautiful butterflies or bows and matched the color scheme perfectly!



The kids' favors were treat bags with purple and green candy and fruit rollups. We were sure to personalize them so the toddlers didn't get hard candy.


The tags were created for each child and hole punched and color grommets were put in the upper left hand corner and tied with lavendar raffia.



The sno-kone table had the kids' favors, poms made by my 6 and 7 year old daughters, the syrups, cups and straw/spoons. The sno-kones were a hit despite the rain.

Pom Tutorial



I love making poms. These particular poms above held up under a tent in pouring rain for 24 hours. I was very impressed. You can purchase the tissue paper at http://www.papermart.com/.


Martha Stewart Wedding has a great tutorial:

Joyous bursts of color dance above a table, imparting a cheerful radiance to a rehearsal dinner or casual reception. The dahlialike pom-poms appear to float in the air; in reality they are hung from the ceiling with monofilament. Echoing the vibrant hanging puffs, pom-pom napkin rings in citrus shades adorn each place setting. Square glass vessels in various sizes line tables. Covered in sunset-hued tissue (cut to size and secured with double-sided tape), they cast a soft glow.


How to Make the Pom-Poms
You'll need tissue paper and 24-gauge white cloth-covered floral wire.


Hanging Pom-Poms
1. Stack eight 20-by-30-inch sheets of tissue. Make 1 1/2-inchwide accordion folds, creasing with each fold.

2. Fold an 18-inch piece of floral wire in half, and slip over center of folded tissue; twist. With scissors, trim ends of tissue into rounded or pointy shapes.

3. Separate layers, pulling away from center one at a time.

4. Tie a length of monofilament to floral wire for hanging.

I also watched this video for further explanation. It is a little loud in the background, but does the trick.





Martha Stewart also has directions for Napkin Rings.

With just a few changes, these follow the same steps as the hanging pom-poms.
1. Stack four sheets of tissue. Cut a 10-by-5-inch rectangle, going through all layers. Make 3/8-inch-wide accordion folds.
2. Fold an 18-inch piece of floral wire in half, slip over center of tissue, and twist to secure. Trim ends of tissue.

3. Separate layers, pulling away from center one at a time.
4. Bend wire into a loop to fit around napkin, and twist end around loop to secure.


My 6 and 7 year old daughters managed to make these small poms with lolipop sticks for the sno kone table.

Olive Oil and Vinegar for Your Next Party Favor


My family visited a great little store in Rockland, Maine this past weekend, (they also have one in Bar Harbor) Fiore Artisan Olive Oils and Vinegars.

They had a beautiful tasting room and store and I cannot begin to tell you how yummy the olive oil and vinegars were.





We were pleasantly surprised by how the flavors of the balsamic (aged 12 and 18 years) tasted. The kids had a great time in the tasting room and we chose the Strawberry Balsamic, Black Cherry Balsamic and Persian Lime Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

At 3 for $30 they make a great favor for bridal shower, wedding, or anniversary party.



I even thought about doing a 'vinegar of the month' for a gift. Be sure to check them out on facebook as well.






One poster on the Fiore facebook wall put up this recipe that looks delicious.

"I used the decadent dark chocolate balsamic with fresh Maine strawberries. Put about 1-2 Tbs in with quart and a little sugar- let them sit for a few hours. Mix some marscapone and whipped cream- use as a topping for the berries in dessert dishes and drizzle with the balsamic- heaven! Also drizzled it on vanilla ice cream."

That is a recipe I am going to try!
